IT workers are picky and often spoiled by the market. At the same time, recruiting mistakes cost a fortune and all companies try their best to avoid them. So, what to keep in mind while in search of the perfect IT candidate? We made a list.
- Build a vacancy profile, describe the hard and soft skills needed for the position. The more detailed your idea of the future employee will be, the less is the chance to hire someone you don’t need.
- Offer enough money. Research the market and provide the candidates with an average income. Do not make a bad bargain, but also try not to get involved in the salary race too early.
- Think of the side benefits of your company. Often companies do not offer anything besides the money. Educational courses, medical insurance, corporate culture, free meals for the workers, flexible schedule, possibility to work remotely — all of it can be as much, if not more, valuable.
- Plan the interview. Our pre-built vacancy profile comes in handy at this stage. Use it to ask precise questions, make them practice-orientated and similar to the tasks that the employee will actually deal with in their workload.
- Be prepared: learn details about the project and the field you hire for, study the vocabulary. It will be much easier to make a good impression of the company and to meet eye to eye with a candidate while speaking the same language.
- Ask broad questions and be prepared to listen closely. The devil is always in the details, and it is much easier to notice unwanted behavioral patterns and main personal traits when a person speaks a lot.
- Don’t impose cases that are too difficult. Remember, it is an interview not a rite of passage. The situation itself is already stressful enough for the candidate, an unreasonable amount of pressure is likely to confuse them even more.
- Ask everyone about the same things, this way you will be able to actually compare them to each other.
- Pay more attention to the candidate's strengths, not to their weaknesses. If they match your expectations with their strengths, then they probably are a good choice. Nobody is perfect. After all, it is only essential for your future employee to possess the good qualities needed to do the job.
- If you like the candidate, introduce them to the team right away. This way you will check if they match each other well, and in case they are not on the same page, the time will be saved for everyone.
